Burlington Mall has been on a green mission for many years. Each year has brought us closer to achieving our goals for a greener, more eco-friendly and sustainable environment — not just within our shopping centre but within our community. Many changes, large and small, have and are being made, alternatives are researched, choices are made and new practices and procedures are being adapted. This is true in our personal lives as well as our corporate lives. Some changes are simple and others require a great deal of effort and a strong commitment. Every change though, however small or unnoticeable, is making a difference in our world. Join us as we turn a deeper shade of green!
Burlington Mall Wins 2011 RCO Platinum Award!
On October 19thThe Recycling Council of Ontario (RCO) held their annual industry awards night. Burlington Mall was entered in the Industrial, Commercial & Institutional Facilities Management category.
The entry included several components that made the mall a contender for an award. Categories included were: waste diversion, tenant initiatives, solid waste diversion, environmental purchasing policy, certificates of approvals from waste haulers, program communications (web site, signage, school Earth Day event, e-waste community event) and innovative programs (rewards program and cleaning products program).
Together these programs helped Burlington Mall achieve the following results:
- 220% increase, or 153.4 in metric tonnes (MT), of organics recycled
- 7% increase, or 423.1 MT, in the reduction in garbage going to landfill.
- 5% increase, or 52.3% landfill diversion rate (exceeding the 51.7% target and the 20-45% industry average)
- Capture of recyclables increased by 52.8 MT while garbage to landfill was reduced by 29.0 MT
Paul Carvalho, Operations Manager and Ian Lawson, Building Operator were the driving force behind the success of Burlington Mall’s recycling programs and were on hand to accept a Platinum RCO Award. Platinum is the highest ranking award and it is quite an achievement.
